- What got you interested in pit bulls?
- Met a pit bull way back when I was in college that I really liked. Had no idea pit bulls were considered a "bad" breed of dog. I started volunteering at a local animal shelter and a local rescue and found that I really responded to the personalities of the various pit bulls that came through. That was probably in the mid 1990s, I guess. I adopted a black lab mix from the shelter who was dog aggressive with a lot of dogs, so I didn't really consider adopting one. But then one day my boyfriend, who was a bartender, brought one home in the middle of the night. He'd found him on his way home from working a shift at the bar. The dog, a young male, got along pretty well with Reba, and he was (and still is) a super-cool dog. When I moved to Baltimore, I started volunteering with a rescue here, eventually started fostering pit bulls and American bulldogs. Now I own three dogs: The same black lab mix, a little pit bull mix named Tucker, and an APBT named Doc.
- What are some of your favorite things people have said about your pit bull?
- Lots of people think Doc's cool, he's a good-looking, super-athletic, confident, friendly dog. It's nice to hear those things. Tucker's sweet as honey, so he gets lots and lots of loving, and I like when people comment on his disposition. He's a good boy.
- What do you think is the best way to fight Breed Specific Legislation?
- Honestly, I think there needs to be an active, vocal, responsible pit bull community to speak for our dogs. Somehow, we need to get past the stereotype of pit bull owner as ignorant sociopath. I also think owners--all of us--need to step up our game, speak up to people who are wrecking the breed's reputation by acting like jackasses in public with their dogs, we need to eliminate breeding/adoption/rescue practices that encourage sale or adoption of dogs of poor temperament because every time a pit bull bites someone, that's a nail in the coffin for all of our dogs, not just the dog that landed the bite.

2009 Session Update
Dear Constituent:
As you might be aware, I had intended to propose a bill during the 2009 Legislative Session that would grant authority to counties to ban pit bulls. This proposed bill was in response to concerns expressed by residents of various Northern Anne Arundel County neighborhoods who are terrorized by pit bulls.
Since the release of my Legislative Update last Tuesday, in which I announced publicly this proposal, I have received an unprecedented number of phone calls and emails from constituents in opposition to any breed-specific dog ban. Those in opposition point out rightly that the problem lies with irresponsible, criminal owners who mistreat these animals, rather than with a specific breed of dog. Accordingly, I have decided to withdraw the bill.
I will continue to work with communities that are most affected by dangerous dogs and, if advisable, develop future legislation that would target irresponsible dog owners by possibly requiring tighter licensing requirements, increased penalties, and enhanced insurance coverages.
I am sincerely appreciative of the efforts so many constituents have made to share their views with me. I am more than happy to defer to the will of the majority. That's what democracy is all about!
